IKEA MAXIMERA: spare parts, common problems and repairs

A drawer that slams shut every time it closes. It starts subtly, then one day it's systematic. In 80% of cases, the culprit is the same: the MAXIMERA damper at the end of its life — or simply not clipped in correctly since assembly. The MAXIMERA is the standard soft-close drawer for all METOD kitchens since 2014. It equips millions of homes. And like any mechanism used ten times a day, it eventually shows its limits.

Here we cover the most reported problems, the parts involved and the adjustments that avoid having to disassemble everything unnecessarily.

Which MAXIMERA do you have?

Before ordering anything, identify your model. The rails are not interchangeable between widths.

The width is shown on the label glued to the bottom of the drawer, or in the original instructions. For cabinets 37 cm deep (low wall units), the 60x37 cm medium drawer is the only compatible one.

The EXCEPTIONELL version uses the same dimensions but incorporates a push-to-open system: a pressure on the front is enough to open, without a handle. The two ranges are not interchangeable — the front attachment mechanism is different.

Why is the MAXIMERA drawer slamming shut?

This is the number one problem reported on forums. The soft-close gradually disappears, then the door slams shut clearly.

Two possible causes, and they are not treated the same way.

Cause 1 — the damper has come out of its housing.

The damper is a small plastic clip attached to the back of the rail. It clips onto a metal lug. During assembly or after an impact, it may unclip. Result: no more slowing down at the end of the stroke. Before ordering a part, open the drawer fully and look at the back of the rail on both sides. If the clip is visible but detached, re-clip it by hand. Often, that's all it takes.

Cause 2 — the damper is worn.

After 5 to 8 years of intensive use, the plastic parts of the mechanism become fatigued. The clip no longer holds. There, replacement is necessary. The damper is removed by pinching the side tabs, and the new one clips into place without tools.

Initial assembly tip: clip the dampers onto the rails before screwing the rails into the cabinet. Space is very limited once the rail is in place. This is the classic mistake that leads to a damper being incorrectly positioned from the start.

How to correct a misaligned MAXIMERA drawer?

The drawer does not close flush. The front is slightly tilted to one side, or there is a gap on one side and not on the other. It's not the rail: it's the front.

The MAXIMERA front is attached to the drawer via two plastic clips (one on each side). These clips attach into holes drilled on the front panel of the drawer. And that's where the trap lies.

For the bottom drawer: the clips are screwed into the two lower holes.

For the middle and top drawers: the clips are screwed into the two upper holes.

If you have mounted the clips in the wrong holes, the front will be too high or too low. It touches the worktop or encroaches on the neighboring drawer. Re-screw the clips into the correct row of holes, and the problem disappears.

For fine horizontal adjustment (front slightly offset to the left or right), the clips allow adjustment of a few millimeters by loosening the fixing screw and moving the clip laterally before re-tightening.

What to do if the drawer front comes off?

A click followed by a front hanging on one side. The plastic clip has given way.

The MAXIMERA front clips are plastic parts that age. An impact on the front (a pot falling into the drawer, a child pulling too hard) is enough to break them. They cannot be repaired: they must be replaced.

Good news: they can be exchanged without disassembling the drawer or the rail. Simply unscrew the fixing screw of the broken clip, remove the clip, insert the new one into the correct hole (see above) and re-screw. Count two minutes per clip.

Can the MAXIMERA rails be replaced?

Yes, but it's a bigger job. The complete rail includes two slides (left and right) which are screwed onto the side walls of the cabinet. They are removed by unscrewing 4 screws (2 per side).

A few points to check before ordering:

  • The width of the rail must correspond to the width of the cabinet, not necessarily the width of the drawer. A 60 cm cabinet receives 60 cm rails.
  • MAXIMERA rails are not compatible with older FAKTUM cabinets (system replaced in 2014). The fixing pitch is different.
  • Order the rails in pairs (left + right). A single rail available for sale does not guarantee the same level of smoothness on both sides.

Practical tips for maintaining your MAXIMERA drawers

A drawer that slides more and more difficultly before slamming shut: it is often grease encrusted or small debris stuck in the slide. Clean the rails with a dry cloth, then apply a thin layer of silicone grease (not classic greasy grease that attracts dust). The glide regains 90% of its silence.

If you move and disassemble your METOD kitchen, keep the rail fixing screws separate from the other screws. They are specific (Torx T20, precise length) and are easily lost in a generic bag.

For kitchens over 8 years old: when replacing a front (kitchen makeover), check the condition of the dampers and front clips while the drawer is disassembled. The cost of a preventive revision is negligible compared to a later disassembly.

How to disassemble a MAXIMERA drawer without damaging it?

The procedure is quick but not intuitive. Many people pull forcefully and end up deforming the rail or tearing off the front clip.

The correct method: open the drawer fully. On each rail, there is a plastic lever — one on each side, one upwards, the other downwards. You must activate them simultaneously (usually: left lever downwards, right lever upwards) while pulling the drawer towards you. The drawer then comes out of the rails freely.

If you also want to unclip the front, this is a separate step. The two front clips are released by pressing them with a flat tool (a wide-blade screwdriver will do) while a second person holds the front. To be done with the drawer removed from the cabinet.

MAXIMERA or EXCEPTIONELL: which one to choose for a replacement?

If you need to replace an entire drawer (rail + drawer body), the question arises. Both ranges have the same dimensions, install in the same METOD cabinets, and are fixed with the same screws.

The difference is only in the front mechanism. EXCEPTIONELL is designed to work without a handle: a pressure on the front triggers the opening (push-to-open). If your kitchen has handles, stay with MAXIMERA. If you want a smooth front without a handle, EXCEPTIONELL is the right option — but you will then have to replace all the drawers in the same column for visual consistency.

A point often ignored: on forums, several users have noted that the EXCEPTIONELL push-to-open mechanism is more fragile than the simple MAXIMERA rail. With children opening forcefully, MAXIMERA holds up better over time.
